Is the TikTok ‘For You’ page of TikTok filled with #targetdresschallenge suddenly? Let us find out what it is and what it is targeting.
We noticed a new trend on Twitter and TikTok where people are wearing vintage outfits, clicking black and white pictures and pretending to live in a different era. Is it related to the new Bridgerton TV show that is making everyone want to be a Duke and Duchess?
How did the Target Dress Challenge start?
The TV series has nothing to do with this trend and it is more about the retail company Target, which explains the name of the challenge.
It all started on 22nd December 2020, when Lorca Damon posted on Facebook with a picture of some dresses displayed in Target that looked like they had fallen right out of a time capsule from the 1800s.
She also captioned this picture that started a full-fledged trend by saying “Target has decided if we’re gonna suffer a pandemic, we might as well look like we just lost the farm after locusts ate our crops.”
A funny comment was also added by Lorca stating that:
“I swear, if I run into a woman wearing this and she’s not in a stage revival of Oklahoma!, I’m going to help hide her from the other sister wives until we can get her a safe house and a divorce.”
This post got the ball rolling as you can see by the 6k likes and 35k shares. Result of this post was Laura Waters taking up this post as a challenge and doing a full-blown photo shoot with the Lorca’s post as context.
The truth is that Ms. Waters never expected these pictures to get so popular. People thought a professional photographer took these pictures and she is a model but the reality is that she is a hairstylist from a small town and her nine-year-old took all the photos. How hilarious is that?
Although this started off on Facebook, people soon took it to TikTok. At first, it looked like someone found old pictures of their grandma and posted them but now it is a trend and everyone is dying to buy these dresses.
Each addition to this challenge is better than the last because they don’t just pose and click a picture, they make it weird, scary or ironic.
What is the Target Dress challenge?
There are some medieval era dresses displayed in Target and people are buying it just to have a photo shoot in the dress and post it for the challenge.
These dresses are available in five colours and in sizes ranging from XS to 4X. Not all of them look fancy enough to be worn to a party but who wouldn’t want comfortable dresses to wear with pockets?
Every country that has Target is participating in this challenge and its not just all women. Men don’t want to be left out and they are really bringing their A-game.
How to participate on TikTok and more
For this challenge, you just need to buy the dress from Target, use a black and white filter and get creative with the poses, props and surroundings.
Kudos to you if you can make look like someone from a previous era completely. A tip to make it look real is to use pets or, better yet, a chicken!
