TikTok users have been experiencing frustration with the app because it keeps asking for their birthday repeatedly.
Is this a new security feature? A glitch? And how to stop it from asking repeatedly? We have answered all of your questions below.
Why is TikTok asking for my birthday?
TikTok is taking action to ensure that you are viewing content appropriate for your age. A lot of trends and videos on TikTok are dangerous and highly influential. Kids should not be watching and imitating a lot of the things that TikTokers do.
So from January 2021, there were new regulations brought out for users who are 16 and under. For them, their accounts are automatically made private and their feed is restricted to what is appropriate for the young audience.
This will prevent children from becoming victims of dangerous trends and hopefully from so many other side effects of constant social media usage.
Of course, not all the users are going to like this change who had been used to unlimited and unsupervised content.
If the app’s algorithm finds out that you are under 13 and you have been posting content, you will get banned. It sounds like a great strategy in theory but because the app is asking the question repeatedly, some users have randomly put in their birthdate and gotten banned for being under 13.
How to solve TikTok’s birthday glitch?
The users have stopped complaining as the glitch has been fixed now but if it is still a problem for you, here’s what you can do about it.
- Log out of the app and log in again. You can do this by going to “Profile” and then clicking on the three horizontal lines on the top right. Select “Settings and privacy” then choose to Log out.
- If that doesn’t work, you will have to uninstall the app and reinstall it. Make sure to back up all your saved drafts because once you delete the app, your data will be lost.
- Contact TikTok’s support team if both of these solutions have not worked for you.
