There’s talk of ‘peg’ because of a small movement on TikTok, but what does it mean and what is #PegAllMen2020?
The biggest movement of 2020 is undoubtedly #BlackLivesMatter, in an attempt to give black people a stronger voice in society. #PegAllMen2020, a small movement on TikTok, attempts to get rid of patriarchy and gender roles.
What does ‘peg’ mean on TikTok?
The meaning of ‘peg’ on TikTok is the same as what it means outside of the social media world.
‘Peg’ comes from pegging, and in SFW (safe for work) terms, it’s when women ‘take charge’ of men when couples get intimate.
On TikTok, users are promoting #PegAllMen2020 not to persuade all girls to ‘peg’ their boyfriends, but trying to go against patriarchy and prove that women are capable of whatever men can do, whether it’s in or outside the bedroom.
TV shows like Broad City addressed the topic back in 2015, so in 2020, it’s definitely becoming normalised.
Where did #PegAllMen2020 come from?
The movement all began when a user (who has asked not to be named) posted a TikTok in April 2020, complaining about the disrespectful DM’s she had been receiving.
She puts the senders in their place by claiming she will do the same to them because they are “within pegging distance”. So watch out!
The teen from Chicago has now started this movement and it’s not just girls that have hopped on the bandwagon, some guys have too.
Some users have suggested that it calls out toxic masculinity as well, where traditional gender roles have forced males to limit their emotions and act as the ‘macho’ man.
