Comedian Mark Curry shared on Instagram that he was a target of racist comments by a hotel staffer at Colorado Springs.
The people who are not of color can never understand when any of their comments can come off as ‘racist’. People like Mark Curry, a comedian, and star of the hit 90s sitcom “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” can only sense the racist undertones, because of the history of their community.
On December 9, the 61-year-old posted a 26-minute video on Instagram, where he showed his 221,000 Instagram followers his conversation with the hotel staffer. The comedian was sitting in the lobby of The Mining Exchange. His performance for the day was scheduled at 3E comedy club.
The conversation began with the employee asking the comedian if he was a guest at the hotel. The employee further said that only guests are allowed to sit in the lobby. To this, Curry inquired why are you not asking this question from the other people sitting here.
Curry said that he was the only black man present there at the time. The employee kept on insisting that he just wants to know why Curry is sitting there and that other people can sit here because they are buying drinks, which means they are the patrons.
Curry said, “I feel threatened by you, your stance, and the way you’re looking at me, I feel threatened”. He then got up from his place and went to the reception to complain about the employees.
The receptionist told Curry that the employees just want to know if you are a guest there or not for safety reasons. After this, Curry left the lobby and went back to his room.
Reactions to the incident
Several co-stars like Holly Robinson Peete came to the actor’s support on Twitter. Many shared their thoughts on the incident and said that anything like this should not happen to anyone.
These are the kind of incidents that tell us that racism still prevails and no matter how famous or influential you are you can be on the receiving end of it.
