TikTokers are speaking against the viability of a 9-5 work week, as that takes away a lot from the personal life of any individual.
On 19 October, a TikToker named Brielle shared her views about her new 9-5 job in the corporate world of New York. She started by saying that this was the first job she had landed after aggressively searching for one until 5 months after graduation. Despite being quite happy about landing a job and loving the work that she is doing she can not help but feel that her work week is too consuming.
Brielle started by explaining that her work day doesn’t start at 9 and ends at 5. Rather, she leaves for work at 7:30 a.m. as she is living far from the city at the moment and can not afford to live near her workplace. She then reaches her home around 6:15 pm every day after which she has no energy to cook food or workout.
She emphasized that how can one possibly date someone or hang out with their friends when they are just extremely tired after coming home. This point of view resonated with many people across TikTok and the video has now gained around 1.2 million views and more than 73,000 comments.

While many are agreeing with Brielle and saying that a 40-hour work week does not leave time for the individual to do anything else in their personal life many others are criticizing the work ethic of Gen Z workers.
Ben Hunnicutt, a historian who focuses on working hours in the corporate world, said that for many Americans work is like their religion, as they directly associate their hard work with the number of hours they work which is ultimately tied to their worth as a person. Thus, for this group of people, the attitude exhibited by Gen Z only comes off as sheer laziness.
