How Scarlett Johansson Became the Ghost in the Machine for the Movie ‘Her’

Remember that mind-bending romance, “Her,” where Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with an AI? Yeah, it won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. But here’s the wild twist: Scarlett Johansson, the voice we all know and… well, love, wasn’t the *original* voice. Not even close. In fact, another incredible actress filmed every single scene on set, only to be completely erased from the final cut. Talk about getting ghosted!

Let us tell you what happened.

Back in 2012, when director Spike Jonze was bringing his futuristic vision to life, he cast the brilliant Samantha Morton to play the AI, Samantha. Yes, her name is Samantha Morton playing a character named Samantha. Kinda meta, right?

Morton wasn’t just in a sound booth reading lines. Oh no. She was *there*, on set, with Joaquin Phoenix. She wore an earpiece, she was present in the room, reacting to Phoenix, delivering her lines live. She performed every single scene, building that intimate, evolving relationship with Theodore Twombly (Phoenix’s character) in real-time. This wasn’t just a placeholder voice; it was an entire, physical performance.

Imagine that. An Oscar-nominated performance from Phoenix, built off the chemistry and interaction with Morton, who would later be completely replaced. Wild stuff.

Why Was Samantha Morton Replaced by Scarlett Johansson?

So, why the sudden switch-up? According to interviews with Spike Jonze himself, the decision to replace Morton came late in the post-production process. Jonze reportedly felt that something wasn’t quite clicking with the voice, that it wasn’t fully embodying the “future of AI” he envisioned. It wasn’t a knock on Morton’s talent, which is undeniable, but more about finding that *exact* tonal quality for the character of Samantha.

He told Vulture in 2014, “We worked together, and it wasn’t till we were in the edit, that we realized that what we had done wasn’t working. It was a really painful realization.”

He then brought in Scarlett Johansson, who re-recorded all the dialogue in just four months. Her unique husky, yet vulnerable, voice ultimately became the iconic sound of Samantha. It was a massive, last-minute creative decision that completely altered the film’s soundscape.

Fans and critics alike have often debated this behind-the-scenes revelation. While Johansson’s performance is widely praised, the story of Morton’s uncredited work sparks a lot of conversation about the nature of acting, performance, and artistic vision.

Can’t imagine being Samantha Morton, pouring my heart into a role, acting opposite Joaquin Phoenix, only to have my entire performance cut and replaced. That’s gotta sting deep. #HerMovie #SamanthaMorton

While Scarlett Johansson’s voice IS perfect for Her, the story of Samantha Morton’s original role is actually insane. It really makes you think about how films are made and what “acting” really means. #HollywoodSecrets

The Ethics of Erasing a Performance

This situation also raises some pretty interesting questions about the nature of performance in the digital age. If an actor physically performs a role, even if their voice is later replaced, does that performance still count? How much credit is due?

Morton herself has spoken about the experience with grace, acknowledging that Jonze was just trying to make the best film possible. She reportedly understood the creative decision, even if it was personally tough. It’s a testament to her professionalism, but it’s still a wild card in movie history.

It’s not just a voice, either. Morton’s presence on set, her physical reactions, and her energy undoubtedly shaped Phoenix’s performance. Even if her voice isn’t heard, her acting helped build the foundation of that on-screen relationship. It’s a fascinating layer to an already complex film about human connection and technology.

Jonze eventually explained to Entertainment Weekly in 2014, “It took us a while to learn what the character was, and in the end, it really was Samantha [Morton] who helped us figure out the character. She was an incredible, incredible actress to work with, and was so much a part of the making of this movie and the character.” So, even without her voice, her contribution was recognized, albeit posthumously to the public eye.

I feel for Samantha Morton, but at the same time, the movie ‘Her’ wouldn’t be the same without Scarlett Johansson’s voice. It’s a tough call for any director. Art is messy sometimes.

This is why you gotta sign those contracts carefully! Imagine getting Oscar-worthy interaction then getting cut for a bigger name. Brutal business. #FilmTwitter

So next time you watch “Her” and get lost in Scarlett Johansson’s seductive AI voice, spare a thought for Samantha Morton, the actress who was there first, laying the groundwork for that groundbreaking performance. It’s a weird, wonderful, and slightly heartbreaking piece of Hollywood lore.
